Dirigo Pines is honored to be home to a great number of veterans from all branches of our nation’s military. This November, to honor our WWII Veterans, Dirigo Pines’ library committee has prepared a special book display with a large selection of WWII reading materials. The display will be in the library from November 1st to Thanksgiving. All are welcome to come view the display. A Veterans’ Day celebration is also in the works.
Did you know that the Veterans’ Day holiday began as a day to remember the end of World War I and was declared a holiday by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919? Originally known as Armistice Day, the holiday became Veterans Day in 1954. When President Wilson declared Nov. 11 a holiday, the primary intention was to have a day to reflect on the sacrifices of those who had served in the military during World War I. Observation of the holiday through parades and meetings was envisioned.
We’ve very proud to have so many veterans at Dirigo Pines – we thank you for your service.
